May 29 I Crave!Dinner time is at hand, and all I can think about is having spare ribs with black bean sauce and palabok! Mind you we have dinner waiting, peas and rice! They taste better if they're a day old. The idea of possibly going to see a friend in conjurs up the memory of the trip that we made a few years back to Sydney. A must stop over was a Pinoy resto. If and when this trip push through, I WILL go the Pinoy resto AGAIN, HAS TO HAPPEN. Maybe then I can have my dear beloved palabok. Drool.... May 22 Lasang Pinoy 10: Food Memories from Childhood (Street Food)Entry for the Lasang Pinoy 10- Food Memories from Childhood Hosted by Buhay Cusinero.
Mom and Dad would often ask me "Why do you always ask for a peso?". I often bugged them for a peso in the afternoons because I would like to buy street food. Yes, piso equals street food to me. Our streets were the fairways of food hawkers from my favorite fishball with the sauce (which I never figured ot what was in it, when I got older it became squid ball and kikyam.), scramble (shaved ice with red food colouring, sugar and milk.), goto, dirty ice cream, isaw, tokneneng, bbq, binatog, mais, popcorn, manggang hilaw, pinya and who could forget exchanging your old garapon, botelya or newpapers for some odd cheeseballs/cheesecurls?
And of course there was the next door sair-sari store. With one peso I used to buy cherry bubblegum in a bundle. Sometimes we used to pretend that the bubblegums were lipsticks, so we would practice putting our lipstick on and chew the gum afterwards. When you stick out your tongue there it is.... redish pinkish tint because of the gum. On a very hot afternoon we would buy sago't palamig, an older version zagu, team it up with oishi, kirei, or chippy. When the break is over, everybody goes back to playing patintero, ma taya- taya, monkey monkey, football, langit lupa, piko or if your parents disapproved the idea of playing on the streets, you then go to your neighbours and play barbie, luto-lutuan, bahay-bahayan, teacher, etc. Later on atari and nintendo family computer came into the picture.
As the years passed, my usual merienda had evolved as well. To mami, palabok, champorado, maruya, and a whole lot more. Street games that we used to play were replaced by younger kids playing the same game. Time stops for merienda! An integral part of the day. When I come home for a visit, I will revisit my old merienda habits, hopefully share it with my boy, while playing mahjong at my neighbours house. Some things never change eh? May 17 Filipino FestivalOn the 11 of June is the Filipino Festival at Yeronga, Brisbane, as I was told by my girlfriend. Can't wait!!! She said there would heaps of FOOD stalls. Ngarrrrkkk.... drool. Mother's DayJust a couple of photos taken last sunday for Mother's Day. It was also ABA National Mothering Week. When I gave birth 3 years ago, ABA was my lifeline. I was a new migrant and a new mom who needed all of the support that I can get. Kudos to the ABA as they have been here for mother's for over 40 years now! The Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) is an organisation of people interested in the promotion and protection of breastfeeding. Amongst these are breastfeeding women and their partners and health professionals such as doctors, lactation consultants and midwives. ABA was founded in Melbourne, Victoria in 1964 (as the Nursing Mothers' Association), with the primary aim of giving mother-to-mother support to breastfeeding women.
The Association is supported by health authorities and specialists in infant and child health and nutrition, including a panel of distinguished honorary advisers. ABA is recognised internationally as a source of accurate information about breastfeeding management and research.
With the support of the Lactation Resource Centre (LRC), ABA provides information to its counsellors and educates the wider community, from preschools to universities and professional organisations. ABA's voluntary breastfeeding counsellors are experienced mothers who have completed an intensive training programme and have successfully breastfed their own children. They are bound by a code of ethics and offer their support over the telephone, in person and through a wide range of literature.
Since its inception over 120,000 people have been members of ABA and thousands more have used the telephone counselling services, literature and community education opportunities. ABA is one of the largest non-profit self-help groups in Australia. As at October 31st 2002, the Australian Breastfeeding Association has 1304 counsellors, 373 trainee counsellors, 355 groups and 11572 members.
A survey of ABA counsellors was conducted in May 1998, to evaluate their role within ABA and the wider community. Results indicated that ABA's counsellors received approximately 261,589 counselling contacts during 1998. Counsellors also spent 634,780 hours performing ABA activities and ABA groups conducted approximately 13,300 community education activities during 1998. Taken from ABA
May 12 Happy 4th Year AnniversaryI am being nostalgic, it's been 4 years since I walked down the aisle. Let me share some photos of the "BIG" day. By the way, I was 4 months pregnant when I got married. Our wedding was very low key, the way we always wanted. Nothing fancy, just a celebration of becoming husband and wife. You see we couldn't afford to pay for our reception, so we asked our family and friends that gifts are not necessary. Their presence was more than enough. We went dutch, so to speak. A little unconventional, but it worked. I highly recommend it for people who are wanting to keep their cost low.
Now 4 years down the track, we are in more in tuned to each other's needs, wants, and goals. As I said on my first post "Marriage is ALWAYS a work in progress, and so are other types of relationships." There are heaps of things to do. But it's better when you have someone to share your life with, a witness to your ups and downs. Someone asked me "What is it about marriage that you like?" I said "At the end of a long day, he comes home to me, gripes or raves about his day, eat dinner, put P to sleep and cuddle when everything has settled down".
